WatICare was not destroyed at Poltava, according to a crew member’s log. Capt. Mylius (my mother’s first cousin) crash-landed the out-of-fuel ship at a fighter base near Kiev, where it was repaired and departed five days later (passing through Poltava and seeing the wreckage of other B-17s there), making a circuitous trip home that took it across North Africa, finally arriving back in England on July 7, The ship flew at least two more missions afterward. All this is from the 100th Bomber Group Foundation website.
