A/C 519 erhielt unmittelbar nach dem Abwurf der Bomben einen direkten Flaktreffer und wurde Berichten zufolge in die Luft gesprengt und zerfiel sofort. Die Beobachter der Besatzung waren der Meinung, dass niemand eine Chance hatte, sich zu retten.

I am nephew of John E. Walsh (KIA). I wonder about the statement that 519 was hit by flak and exploded over Merseberg on bombs away since it crashed 60 miles away in Zwickau. Also, 4 bailed out and were POW, one of which was captured near Zwickau.

That is the original statement form MACR. But it could be mixed with another B-17 lost that day. This happende often in the chaos of air battle.
