My friend Harry Mason was a navigator on a B-17 named “Shasta”
When I asked why they called her Shasta, Harry responded “Because shasta get us there….shasta get us back……shasha have galoline” with a big smile on his face.
His Distinguished Flying Cross was on a shelf. I had to pry it out of him as to why he received it. “For doing some very distinguished flying!” he said with a laugh. It turns out he flew the B-17 back to base when the pilot and co-piot were killed by Japanese fighters.
Harry was a good commercial artist with a great sense of humor.
Rest in peace my friend….
