My dad John J. Ehlen was the flight engineer and top turret gunner on the Piccadilly Lilly. First Piccadilly Lilly was shot down. My dad was was reported missing in action and then POW. He went to VJ Day parade in Sioux Falls. Parade goers were so excited that they hugged my dad and pulled him out of his brother’s truck that he was driving in the VJ Day parade. The truck somehow caught on fire and burned up in the middle of the VJ Day parade!

Hi Sue Ehlen, Through recent family ancestry research my family found out that we are related to Monico Rodriguez. We found pictures and info but not sure what he looks like. I wonder if you have anymore info.

Sue, my father, Al Davis flew with your dad on the Lilly . He missed the 8OCT mission having completed his 25 missions ( Lucky Bastards Club) shortly before on 3OCT . He was in London when he heard his beloved Lilly and ‘chums’ had gone down. I remember my Dad mentioning your father’s name along with that of Robinson, Hufford and Peterson. I actually met a couple of those guys when I was a boy. My Dad wrote a diary during his time in the 351st/ 100th BG. I will have to look to see if he had any references to your Dad.

Sue, Your father and mine were crew members together on the Lilly . My dad, Albert Davis, was not on the 8OCT mission as he had completed his 25 missions and was on leave in London when he got news of the Lilly getting shot down. The guy who took his place at waist gunner was killed by flak over the target . A fact that did not escape my dad and his sense of ‘ destiny’ about life. His diary entry for that day was a somber one reflecting on the loss of his buddies. I believe he stayed in touch with your dad after the war and others who survived that mission, like Hufford, Robinson and Peterson. Those names were mentioned in my home and I know he visited with them after the war. I believe that the 8OCT mission would have been their 25th and they would go home after it. My Dad spoke highly of ‘ Ole Murph’ the pilot who acted courageously in keeping Lilly stabilized so that your dad and other crew could escape the doomed Lilly. I will check my Dad’s diary to see if he has any mentions of your dad .

My wife’s Grand Father was Gerald O. Robinson. Long passed on but I am craving anyone who knew him, or remembers him. Photos or anything as his family loves that I am digging into who he was and what he did for our country.
