Interesting footnote – US actress Swoosie Kurtz is daughter of Col Frank Kurtz. He named her after the plane per Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swoosie_Kurtz

GREAT ARTICLE! EXISTENCE & SUMMARY OF OLE BETSY/SWOOSE’S HISTORY UNKNOWN TO MOST. THANKS FOR POSTING! My wife’s former Father-in-Law Technical Sergeant Ismael Leonard Gudgeon was a Flight Engineer & Waist Gunner on a B-17D at Hickam Field in Hawaii and Clark & Delmonte Field in the Philippines just before and during the outbreak of WWII. He was subsequently a POW in Japan from early 1942 until the end of the War. TRULY PART OF THE GREATEST GENERATION TO WHOM WE ALL OWE SO MUCH!
