My Father, B-17 Bombardier – Bertram Theiss, – 92nd Bomb Group, 407th Sq. told me, that on his first mission, July 26, 1943, to bomb Hanover, a B-17, 3 planes to the right of his, took a direct hit, by flak, and blew up.
There were no survivors from the B-17 that exploded, in mid flight.
A B-17 bombardier that was in a B-17, that was two planes to the right of my Father’s B-17, went berserk, and was taken off of his B-17, in a straight jacket, when his B-17 landed back at Alconbury.
My guess is the B-17 named „Yo Brother“ was the B-17 that exploded.
