Bei dem Einsatz in Harburg, Deutschland, am 20. Juni 1944 war ich Kugelturmschütze im Flugzeug 42-97893, das in der Position Nr. 4 in der Führungsstaffel der oberen Gruppe des 41. “B” Combat Wing.
Das vermisste Flugzeug, #42-31997, flog auf der Position #5 in der gleichen Staffel.
Die Position der beiden Flugzeuge ist unten dargestellt. Als wir den I.P. erreichten, waren bei der vermissten Maschine zwei Propeller ausgefallen, aber es gelang ihr, in der Formation zu bleiben und ihre Bomben auf das Ziel abzuwerfen. Unmittelbar nach dem Abwurf der Bomben stürzte es auf das Deck. Ich konnte es auf dem Weg nach draußen bis zur feindlichen Küste verfolgen, habe es danach aber nicht mehr gesehen.
Als ich sie zuletzt sah, flog sie noch unter Kontrolle. Ich bin mir über die Ursache des Problems nicht sicher, aber ich glaube, dass das vermisste Flugzeug von Flakfeuer getroffen wurde.

thank you very much for your lovely feedback. I am very pleased that you and your family like the photos. The war diaries of the various units make it very easy to follow the plane’s flight up to the emergency landing. It is the only heavy bomber that has ever landed safely in one piece in this area. It is all the more pleasing that the crew, and thus your grandfather, survived the crash relatively unscathed. I hope that he returned home safe and sound after the war. It is a really exciting story.
