B-17 42-38051 / My Yorkshire Dream Details

Co-Pilot Ralph Quint was my grandfather. And did you know that 42-38051 was the next B17 off the assembly line after Thunderbird.

Leslie Black is my father. He wrote in his journal that the a/c was broke in THREE pieces, not two. He came up out of his ball turret to find he was in the middle piece of the a/c. He was able to identify two other crewmembers in their parachutes, although one crewmembers parachute did not open. The other crewmembers parachute was caught in a tree as the crewmember went down. My fathers parachute landed in a farmers field in the middle of a haystack. He was immediately arrested and held as POW.

Hello Dave, the coordinates 51° 00′.55″ N and 12°15’10.47″ is for the town Zettweil. I looked to the MACR and the place of crash in the files is listed as: Between Zettweil and Poehla, 5 km W of Grossroeda, 10 to 12 km W of Altenburg.
I sent you an email with link ot a map.
Please check.

Hello William. I am the uncle of David Young and see he may not have responded to your email. I can perhaps fill in some questions about relationships in that my brother, David Young (same name as his son) was married to Tawny, who wasn’t aware who her real father was until sometime later in her life. Tawny’s mother didn’t divulge the real story to her but a slip of tongue from someone eventually led her to her real father’s name. She was born in 1944 & passed in 1999. Much research by my brother Dave & myself led us all to a reunion of 303rd bomb group in Seattle around 1985 where we met a pilot who was flying near 42-38051 on the day it was lost. The story continues but I won’t bore you with it now. Should you like to make contact I will be pleased to answer any questions I am able. I have understood the Quint family is in the east area of Massachusetts or so? Drop me a line if you will. – Richard Young
