B-17 44-6976 / Flak Dodger Details

If the photo of Crew 113 (Dexter’s) shown above was taken 23 June 1944 at Podington, the date it arrived in Podington cannot have been 1/2/45? Maybe a different Flak Dodger; there were a few I believe, or a typo which should read 1/2/44?

Thank you! You are right. Maybe this „Flak Dodger“ is not #44-6976. Podington 1/2/45 should be correct, because other B-17s in same production-block arrived UK early 1945. But no other B-17 of the 92nd Bomb Group was called „Flak Dodger“. That’s a mistery.

the olive drab finish and high count of sortie markings eliminate the match up of this serial number with this image. Recommend removing the image from this listing accordingly.

The 43m sortie markings and olive drab paint over the high underside demarcation mark tis as a much earlier California built B-17G. Perhaps with some photo adjustments the demarcation on the #2 cowling can determine if she is a Douglas or Vega build the Long Beach range would be in the Block 20/30 range ( 42-38XXXX or slightly lower). a Vega would be 42-39XXX or 42-97YXX where Y= high 400 or low 500.
Recommend checking those ranges. If Group is known this may yield an identity. If 1st Bomb Division, Cliff Bishop may list her. she would have arrived in 1943.

There were very few early block Douglas or Vega B-17Gs left in the 92nd Bomb Group at the time the photograph was taken. The data block style matches Douglas. I favour 42-38110 being ‚Flak Dodger‘. It was also in the 407th Bomb Squadron.
