Assigned 324BS/91BG [DF-D] Bangor 30/8/42; Bassingbourn 26/9/42; battle damaged Ludwigshafen 22/3/43 with Chas Cliburn, who brought her back to crash landed RAF Lt Horwood, (10 Returned to Duty); 42m Base Air Depot, Burtonwood 15/3/44; en route from from UK to Dallas, US, 3/5/44 with Bob Lewis, Co-pilot: Bill Gates, Navigator: Wes Cofer, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: John Howe, Radio Operator: Bob Knap, pass:- Capt Gerald Carverinj, Lts Emmett Gilbert (inj), Hugh Midgett, Bob Connor, Jack Compf, Dan Teschworth (11 Returned to Duty); power failure caused force landed two miles W of Kraffi, Ivory Coast 3/5/44; repaired and Returned to the USA for war bond tour. TAURUS aka THE SAD SACK.

I have a picture of my Dad, Arthur Mack Connor as a crew member of the Sad Sack. There is no date on the pic. My dad and his crew flew on 2 and maybe 3 B-17″s during their 26 missions. He was very quiet about his time in the Army Air Corp and provided me little specific information. He was the top turret gunner and chief engineer. Shot down 4 enemy aircraft and I believe he was on the first day light raid over Germany. He received the purple heart and I have ribbon for the distinguished air medal (/). I believe the Sad Sack was his second plane as I have his flight jacket for the Paper Doll. I believe the pilot was named Englebrecht. Any ifo would be most aprreciated.

Your best bet is to contact Jim Szpajcher through the 91st Bomb Group Memorial Association Facebook Page, as he’s the absolute expert on 91st Bomb Group personnel, especially the 1942-44 period. If you aren’t registered on Facebook, leave your email address and I’ll forward it to him.
