I don’t know where the author got his information, but this history is completely incorrect. I have copies of my father’s orders where he and his crew was sent by train to the Boeing plant to pick up 1-2499. I also have his flight log, which shows that they flew it down across the US to MacDill, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, to Natal, then across the Atlantic and Africa. Originally, they were to defend Java, but it fell before they got there, so they were redirected to India. They were dropping bombs in Burma by 08 March 1942. He also was in the Halpro group in N. Africa. After completing their
tour, they came back to CONUS; 1-2499 was later flown back to Hendricks Field where a ground crewman cracked it up. I have copies of all these documents, including his flight log, and there is an image of 1-2499 in Jungle camoflage at Hendricks.
