My Uncle Chris Matarese was a crew member on the Florencia. I only recently learned of the details of the ditching, the date, the name of the plane’s nickname using AI. While I don’t recall speaking directly to my Uncle about the crash I do remember a conversation I had as a boy with my Cousin Peter in the early 60’s. As it turns out Peter had a paddle from his dad’s life raft when the plane ditched in the English Channel, hanging over he’s bed. So I knew the plane had ditched but not much else. Just amazing to learn more details after all these years. My dad and all my Uncles served in WW2 all combat veterans. All wonderful gentlemen, humble, and reserved, rarely spoke of the war. Uncle Chris went back to his hometown of Brooklyn after the war, got married, and had two children with my Aunt Aggie. My Uncle sadly passed away much too early in 1983.
