The final mission data on this site is incorrect.B17 42-102617 SUT if fact made an emergency landing at RAF Chailey in East Sussex England after aborting its mission to bomb a V1 launch site at Fiefs in the Pas de Calais on 3rd August 1944 after three engines failed and after landing in flames with a full load of bombs it exploded into smithereens. We have three letters from the crew explaining what happened. Pilot Frank L Allred, Ball Turret gunner Robert M Mitchell and Nose gunner Nick Leschak. Thank you for the information.
So, the cause is mechanical fault, instead battle damage.
Cheers
