The summary says that the Shatzi broke in half. Where is this information based on?
I live in the village of Eerde, where the Shatzi crashed. I am gathering information about this event for our website and I want to have the facts as accurate as possible.

Hello Ad van de Laar,
the information is from Dave Osborn’s Master Log. I can’t confirm the information either at the moment.
The MACR 1039 does not mention, that the aircraft broken in half.
You can read the MACR files here:

I can’t provide information on Shatzi breaking in half, but I do have a photograph of the crew with their names if you’d like. Shoot me an email and I’ll send it over.

The 390th BG mission report for October 20, 1943, mentions the aircraft breaking in half: „Another aircraft from the 390th, the ‚Shatzi‘ (230719-[coded] P, 569[th BS]), was hounded by enemy fighters around the same time the ‚Sequatchiee‘ [another B-17, hit by flak which returned to base despite four men bailing out over enemy territory] was hit. While the pilot tried to shake off their attackers by engaging in violent evasive maneuvers, the Germans still managed to bring the plane down. Other air crews watched in horror as the Shatzi fell into a spiral and broke in two before they lost sight of it. The plane ultimately crashed near Hergenbosch, Germany. All but two members of the crew (Herman E. Gruntmier and Harry E. Johnson) survived. Of those eight men, only one (John K. Hurst), was able to avoid capture. The last plane set down at Framlingham at 4:12 in the afternoon. Nearly half had been damaged, though apart from the loss of the Shatzi and its crew, as well as the four men from the Sequatchiee, no other casualties were reported.“ https://5085.sydneyplus.com/archive/Portal/390th.aspx?lang=en-US&p_AAAH=tab7&p_AAAJ=tab7&d=d
