This photo is not the earlier Shack Bunny lost on 10-9-43. This is the aircraft that replaced her and carried on her name. This aircraft survived the war and was flown home to the scrap yard. My father, Carter Hart, was bombardier on this airplane from 11-43 to 6-44 from the 385th at Great Ashfield. It was a very lucky airplane and suffered no casualties or major damage while my father flew his 30 missions, 8 of which were on the Shack Bunny. His pilot was Lt. (Black Dog) Davis.

Hi Cooper, do you happen to know the serial number of the Shack bunny pictured here? I’m guessing it is a late production Boeing-built F model that would have a 42-30XXX serial number.

Marc, from what I’ve gathered this is 42-30819.

Meahwhile, I have updated and linked the correct pictures. No picture of 42-3551 found so far. #42-3551 has a chin turret mounted. Thank you for your help.

My grandfather was Frank Burton Walls. I know that he flew the last voyage of the Shack Bunny from Europe to the states for it to be scraped. I was wondering if anyone has a list of all his missions? I have a list of most of them, but not all of them. Also, I am looking for where my grandfather was between Dec 1943, after he flew his first 25 missions, to July 1944, when he reenlisted for another 25 missions. I’m just looking for where his where abouts were, the first 7 months of 1944.
Thanks, Zane Walls

All, I was wondering, my grandfather Frank B. Walls was a pilot of the Shack Bunny, but he is not listed as a crew member. Why is this, and how does it get updated? Thanks, Zane

Hello Zane,
thank you for the information.
The crew list here are the names of the last crew, whose went lost with this B-17.
My database does not covered all crews, who flown with the B-17. I am sorry for that.
But I like to read comments like yours! 🙂
