The tail gunner wrote a book. According to him, it was accidental friendly fire from two incendiary bombs dropped by another B-17 striking the tail & left stabilizer. Not flak or Ak-Ak. Also, there’s a single pic showing a side profile of the fort in a group of other B-17’S. Can send it over if you’d like?
