My father, Dick Murdoch, was a navigator on this B-17 though listed as a Waist Gunner. Most of this crew flew as a unit earlier on B-17s out of Snetterton named “Kats Sass II” followed by “Temptation”, 42-30188, both of which crashed due to mechanical problems before leaving England. This B-17, 42-97620, brought down by enemy fire near Felsbergerof, Germany on April 24, 1944 was named “Goering’s Nightmare” according to newspapers back home announcing the crew’s capture. The crew ended up as POWs in Luft Stalag III until liberated on April 29, 1945 from a POW camp to which they were transferred by foot and rail near Nuremberg in January, 1945. I would be interested in hearing from any descendants of the crew and receiving any guidance in securing after action reports related to missions of Kats Sass II, Temptation and Goering’s Nightmare.
