This is my father’s plane, Donald Borbee, Bombardier. He had a great story about this event (although very serious at the time). It was Christmas Eve. The Battle of the Bulge is happening down the road from where they crashed, but people in the village of Brussels were dining in cafes and carrying on about their business as usual. The crew sold their silk parachutes (statute of limitations has ran out to charge him with left against USA) to women in the village and used all the money to drink themselves silly all night. As my father said, the most unholiest Christmas Eve, but the most grateful one to be alive.
