The aircraft was knocked out of formation by enemy aircraft (pilot: Josef “Jupp” Keil, III./JG 301) and was on fire between the #2 engine and the fuselage. Eyewitnesses, TSgt Stanley M Debolt and Sgt John R Johnson, reported that the plane exploded in mid-air over Stendal, Germany. There were no survivors.
