Ernest Glenn Baker, Jr. was a high school classmate of my mom and dad. I met him once, and he told about his interment as a POW. The enlisted prisoners got worse treatment than officers, and they shared camps with Russian prisoners. They often only had potato peelings to eat.
He specifically said that when an AA shell took the nose off his B-17, he unstrapped from the top turret and fell free through the open nose before he opened his parachute.
His classmates called him Glenn, not Ernie. That may have been a choice he made as a AAF crewman.
