Assigned 423BS/306BG Westover 15-August-1942, B-17F 41-24509, ‘Miss Swoose’ was damaged by AA fire between the Initial Point (IP) and the target which resulted in a fire on #3 engine during mission to bomb the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France on 9-Nov-42. Aircraft managed to drop its bomb load but had to be abandoned and crashed into the sea near the target. 6KIA 4POW MACR 16010.

Assigned to 306BG/367BS at Westover 16-Aug-1942; Thurleigh 13-October-1942. 9-Nov-42 despatched on mission to bomb the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France it was damaged by flak. Upon return it landed at Portreath, over-ran the runway, overran a dirt berm and crashed into a field. The Navigator 2Lt William L. Eubank was thrown through the nose but was only shaken up. The Bombardier 1Lt William P. Erickson was KIA by flak over the target. The aircraft was salvaged on 12-November-1942.

Assigned 324BS/91BG [DF-G] Bangor 2-Sep-42; Bassingbourn 29-Sep-42; Despatched on 23-Nov-1942 to bomb the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France. The Group was unable to bomb because of 10/10 cloud cover and headed back to Bassingbourn. The aircraft was attached three different times by enemy aircraft, but managed to return to England. However the field at Bassingbourn was fogged in, so the pilot attempted an emergency landing at Watford but struck a pylon and crashed field near Black Boy pub, Leavesden, UK, killing two of the crew outright. Three others died of their injuries later.
